My husband and I, both in our 60’s, have just returned from our 15th trip to the wonderful island or Skiathos, and we were definitely unimpressed by the recent changes that the Greek Government have taken across the entire island.
From a wonderfully diverse island, albeit small and compact, we found that standardisation has been used for food; drink and souvenirs, to the detriment of the holidaymaker, not just in the main town of Skiathos, but at each resort too.
Standardising prices I can just about understand – but standardising Menu’s is very short-sighted. Why would tourists choose to eat or drink in the side streets and alleyways, where you could get more authentic Greek food and drinks, a little cheaper, as well as brushing shoulders with the locals, when you have to pay as much for your meal as a restaurant in a prime harbour position, and the menu is exactly the same!
I’m afraid it spoilt our enjoyment of the island to the extent that we will probably not return.
