We recently took a 3 day break at Sinai Guest House which sits above the town of Lynton in Exmoor, Devon.
The house was built in 1850 as a gentleman’s residence for the Lord Mayor of London and then became a hotel in the 1930’s. It became a guest house in the 1960’s.
It took us rather a lengthy time to find the access road once we reached Lynton. It is visible from what is called the Bottom Meadow car park but the roads are somewhat narrow and twisty as well being a steep climb!
It is certainly a splendid view once you reach your destination. Our hosts were Alison and Victor who welcomed us upon arrival with a cup of tea and a slice of delicious home made lemon cake in the guest lounge.
Free parking is available near the house as well as an electric vehicle charging station.
I had pre-booked Room 2 on the second floor because of its wonderful sea view, where, on a clear day you can see the Welsh coastline.
We had coffee and tea facilities (with biscuits) as well as bottled water. The bed was large and certainly comfortable. I was attracted to a Chaise Lounge, nicely positioned to sit and gaze out of the window across to the Bay beyond. A wardrobe along with other drawer spaces were available as well as seating and a flat TV screen. Free High Speed Internet (Wi-Fi) is available.
The shower room was not huge, but adequate along with complimentary toiletries and a hair dryer.
The guest lounge is a relaxing area and not far away is a well stocked bar with local ciders and a wine selection. An honesty box is in place.
Breakfast, served in the Dining room, has a sea view window. From another window, you look down upon a bird station where you can watch all types of birds come and go. Victor cooks the breakfast and Alison does the waiting/serving. You can select your breakfast the night before by completing a menu sheet from a wide range of choices.
Part of the garden is private but there is another part, nicely terraced with seating and where a path makes its way down to Bottom Meadow car park in the town.
Below the town of Lynton sits the town of Lynmouth which you can access via a cliff railway if you don’t want to drive down. It costs £3 for a single trip. You have to pay again if wanting to get back the same way.
Close to Lynton is The Valley of the Rocks which is well worth a visit and where you can travel onwards to enjoy nearby wood and cliff walks.
We really enjoyed our 3 days exploring the area which attracts many hikers/walkers, artists and tourists.
