Being a Silver Traveller who lives in London, I often visit the theatre. Last month my sister and I went to see Show Boat at the New Covent Garden Theatre in Drury Lane. I wasn’t particularly enthusiastic beforehand but my sister particularly liked the original film (she was a huge fan of Howard Keel) and so I was happy to go along. Well, I have to admit, it absolutely blew me away! It is one of the best musicals I have ever seen! I had forgotten that the story is partly about racial inequality and I had also forgotten the impact some of the songs (such as Old Man River) could have. We were both reduced to tears quite a few times throughout the show. The acting was superb, the set was very cleverly designed so that the actors were often standing right out within the audience and the music was stunning. I felt I had to tell people to make sure that they don’t miss the boat on this production..it is worth a visit to London just to see it.
