Having lived in Doncaster all my life I have hardly ever visited the city of Sheffield close by. After a busy morning shopping in Meadowhall or meadow hell we decided to change tack in the afternoon. Sheffield Winter Gardens is a breath of fresh air in this city of industry. Situated near the centre it’s great to have such an attraction in this often grimy city landscape. The massive greenhouses are amongst the largest glasshouses in Britain. Containing over 2500 plants from around the world it was great to wander around, cosy and dry and warm, free from the torrential rain outside. A stunning green paradise containing fern, grasses and tropical palms grow next to native British plants. Do visit . It’s free.
For trivia buffs – the building is so large it can house over 5000 domestic greenhouses.
