Reasons for trip

We took our friends for a day out to Manchester. They are not very confident about finding their way around a city, so we did the booking and planning for them. She loves to spend all day browsing around expensive shops without actually buying anything!

So just to make the day a bit more interesting, we pre-booked tickets for the Science & Industry Museum. The (free) timed tickets ensured that there were very few visitors in at any one time. Our first stop was the cafe and I can recommend the food. We had a good look around the exhibits and were like big kids in the interactive section. It was not possible to see the Power Hall, the 1830 Station and Warehouse nor the Air and Space Hall because these areas are undergoing a multi-million-pound restoration programme.

As a child, with regards to history lessons, I remember being more interested in the Industrial Revolution than monarchs and battles. Several years ago, we took the grandchildren to M.O.S.I. and they were fascinated. On that occasion, there were Explainers demonstrating the moving machinery and engaging the children. At that time, I thought the older boy would consider engineering as a career, but he has chosen to study economics.

It was typical Manchester weather the day we went – throwing it down with rain! So our little tour of the museum was a bit more enjoyable than going from shop to shop for the whole of the day!

I would recommend visiting the museum with your grandchildren, but do find out beforehand what is on, as there are free family shows on certain days.
