Reasons for trip

Having parted with a suggested sum for entry to this magnificant building I expected great things. I was not disappointed. The voluntary stewards were very helpful with a ready to hand leaflet and advise on a guided tour or a self guided tour. We took the former and with a knowledgeable guide set off to the Nave. We learned so much about the history of the building and the influence of various builders and restorers, who in some instances took things out and added others to enhance the spiritul life of those who wished to worship there.

Did you know that the Cathedral was/is built on 4 feet of foundations on a gravel bed? Also, did you know that at the end of the Nave a small lid is raised and a 6 foot cane put down a hole and when raised shows the depth of water below the floor?

The stained glass is striking and wonderful as the Autumn sun shines through and the oldest church clock in the country is a sight for sore eyes. We wandered through cloisters that enhance the precincts of the north side as we wended our way to a striking Chapter house that not only houses elaborate stone carvings, but one of only 4 copies of the Magna Carta. After 75 minutes of time travelling backwards and to present day we were introduced to the delights of the cafe were we rested and reflected over an excellent lunch. Meat eaters and vegetarians well catered for.

If you have a blue badge and require close by parking, enter the Cathedral close and a very helpful car-parking attendant advises you on where to go. Yes you do have to pay, but the cost goes towards the restoration funds for the Cathedral and you get a discount in the shop and a free coffee or tea.

Don't take my words for it,experience it for yourself.
