One of my favourite places to sit and ponder, walk gently amongst wildflowers and trees whilst listening to the tide ebbing and flowing below or to challenge myself with steep steps and stunning coastal views.
Leaving Sidmouth, drive up Salcombe Hill and park in the NT (free) car park opposite the Observatory. There is a large map at the entrance to the walk. Suitable for all. Gentle paths, with benches overlooking Sidmouth or Weston that weave back and forth on the cliff top. Or carry on to the coast. Easy 2.2 km walk that goes along the top and back through the woods with the best seat in town to sit and have a picnic or meditate.
Or carry on down many steep steps and walk the coast path. The path from Sidmouth to the starting point has now fallen into the sea, but it’s still possible to walk safely up the hill on paths or up Salcombe Hill if feeling energetic.
