Although this was my fourth visit to Barcelona it was the first time that I have been inside Gaudi's unfinished cathedral – the Sagrada Familia. Fortunately my travelling companion had the foresight to suggest that we purchase our tickets online beforehand. Thank goodness we did! The queues to buy tickets were horrendous, but we managed to walk straight in with our pre-paid tickets.
This famous cathedral was in the process of being built when the architect Gaudi was run over and killed by a tram in 1926. What a tragedy! What an artist he was! I have not seen any other architecture quite like that of Antoni Gaudi.
The cathedral is magnificent and quite unique. What impressed my friend and myself when we entered was the light and brightness – so many cathedrals are rather dark and gloomy inside – not so the Sagrada Familia. It really is amazing and the atmosphere inside is peaceful and comforting, despite all the crowds of visitors.
Unfortunately we were unable to go up into the towers due to work being carried out – I am sure it is amazing albeit very high and not for sufferers of vertigo.
Do go and visit the Sagrada Familia if you are in Barcelona and I really would recommend that if you plan to visit you buy your tickets online beforehand – to save at least an hour of queueing.
