Reasons for trip

Personal / family celebration

We went to the Royal Lodge after a family outing, canoeing on the River Wye. The Royal Lodge was busy – and probably the first pity was that there really were not enough staff on hand – we had a long wait to be served, then there was little flexibility in what we could have. The only way to have a sandwich was to have a full afternoon tea at £13.95. As several people in the party wanted a sandwich only this was a pity. The afternoon tea when it arrived was nicely presented with pretty china cups and plates. However the bread used to make the sandwiches was slightly dry – not the standard one would expect at that price.

I suggest that the Royal Lodge offers afternoon guests the choice of just having a sandwich and that they ensure they use fresh, good quality bread.

The scones were nice, a good size and there was plenty of jam and cream. The selection of cakes was small – a choice of only two kinds.

The staff were helpful and friendly, doing a good job but very overstretched.

The Lodge is spacious, set in lovely surroundings with beautiful views of the river Wye.
