The Royal Hotel Cardiff – 4* just along St Mary’s Street from the rail and bus stations so perfect location. Entrance not particularly grand, and you have to go up a few steps then along a short corridor, down a few more steps, then the lift up to reception on second floor. Phew. It feels a bit odd, but there is actually another entrance at the back on the same level as the lift so it would be fine if you have suitcases or a wheelchair.
It was hard to tell about the reception as they were in the middle of sawing up the reception desk when I got there! Otherwise, it is well decorated, clean and modern, and staff were very welcoming. It was only £49 for a single room (no breakfast) which was an excellent standard – a large twin room, modern, light and airy, with new shower fittings. The amenities are great with free WiFi that works, big TV screen and tea/coffee facilities (once I found them) in the wardrobe alongside an iron and ironing board.
They were definitely extra comfy pillows and duvet and I actually slept really well. It was a good price, booked online through booking.com a week before. They did send information on paying a bit extra to up-grade but it was not necessary. This will be our preferred hotel when staying in Cardiff from now on.
