We had an excellent day here with our 7 year old grandson despite it raining much of the time. We arrived soon after it opened and left when it closed.
There is an excellent exhibition building with an interesting film about gunpowder etc with special effects which we all enjoyed. There were also special exhibitions we did not have time to see as we were enjoying ourselves with some of the many other more "hands-on" activities. We had trips around the site with both the land train and the military truck tour (adults £2). The land train was probably the more interesting as there was a commentary about the various buildings we saw as well as a stop to see the deer – this is a Site of Special Scientific Interest so plenty of wild life about. The truck was more of an adventure with bumps galore and good fun. Probably not necessary to do both though we enjoyed them. I do not think either suitable for wheelchair users but the land train could be accessed with a few steps. Everything else on the site would be fine for those with mobility problems.
Our grandson made and launched a rocket as well as racing a bottle car – both thoroughly enjoyed and no charge for either. The staff helpers made sure he was successful and explained the basic science behind them. There is a large outdoor children’s play area but did not investigate this as it was raining. We all went to the Mad Lab (included in the entrance fee) which was noisy fun. There is also a rifle range which again we did not investigate as plenty of other things perhaps more suitable for a 7 year old.
The food in the café, although not a great variety, was reasonably priced as were the items in the gift shop.
We shall certainly return as there is plenty to interest adults as well as being fun for children – though possibly more for 6 and up rather than toddlers. Many of the staff are volunteers with real enthusiasm for and knowledge about the Mills and willing to help and answer questions on all subjects and at all levels. We considered our day there excellent value for money and a great place to visit if you are interested in history or science.
