Reasons for trip

Regular holiday

This was our second river cruise with Viking having previously been on the Douro in Portugal. We chose this trip starting and finishing in Bordeaux having travelled on the Gironde, Dordogne and Garonne rivers. The trip started at Birmingham airport having parked the car at APH car park at the unearthly hour of 4.45 am. On arrival at the airport we found the special assistance desk as I had booked a wheelchair through Flybe. On arrival we were met and taken to the ship. (I still don’t know the difference between a ship and a boat) As we arrived in the morning we had lunch on the ship. Those used to cruising will know the high standard of the meals. With Viking wine is included at lunch and dinner. The crew were very friendly and made us feel like guests rather than the modern trend to call us customers. The majority of passengers were from America who are always friendly and as each state is like a separate country were very interesting to talk to. The number of passengers was about 160 making it easier to talk to most people during the week of the cruise. Viking cruising is quite relaxed and dress code is informal. We always go for the cheaper cabins as we only use it for sleeping, preferring to talk to other people or go on the included excursions which generally are no too arduous. The only disadvantage is that to get to the restaurant there is a short flight of stairs. Beyond there is a lift. The local guides live in the area, are very knowledgeable and able to answer questions about the history and culture of the area. Viking provided listening devices wirelessly connected to the guide. On board entertainment is excellent but not as lavish as it would be on an ocean cruise. The last day is saying goodbye but in the knowledge of making new friends and looking forward to the next cruise.
