This hotel was our base for two nights during our South African tour. Oudtshoorn is at the heart of the beautiful Little Karoo region, on the famous N62 wine route. Quirkily, it describes itself as the “ostrich capital of the world!”
The hotel staff were excellent from the time we arrived, taking care of all our luggage. Welcome drinks were ready for us as we entered a beautiful, colonnial-style building full of charm and elegance. Our room was perfect – excellent accommodation, spacious and stylish.
The lounge area is delightful, adjacent to the dining room where we were treated to superb meals on both evenings, including ostrich steak! I should add that one of these meals was a celebration of our 30th wedding anniversary, and we couldn’t have chosen a better venue. The bar area is situated at the other side of the dining room, and if anything is rather small given the size of the hotel, but the drinks served were not affected at all by this! A full breakfast was taken in the downstairs cafeteria, or rather, as we preferred, outside on the garden terrace. Delightful!
Oudtshoorn and the hotel are perfectly situated for exploring this region, where no visit is complete without stops at the Cango Caves, the Cango Ostrich Farm, and the Cango Wildlife Park, which I shall review separately.
