We revisited Portmeirion once again for the excellent Steampunk weekend. If you’ve never been to one of these events – then you haven’t lived! It is great fun within this beautifully unique village.
The site near Penrhyndeudraeth, Gwynedd was acquired by Welsh architect Clough Williams – Ellis in 1925. It is a picturesque location overlooking a wide estuary with mountains beyond. Many of the quirky buildings are Italianate in design and surrounded by ornamental gardens.
One definition of Steampunk is: “A creative social movement that draws inspiration from Victorian and pre-war history in an anachronistic mix of science fiction, modern values and a sense of fun”. One example of this silliness is the teapot racing, which at Portmeirion took place on the ornamental pond. These inventions had propellors and were operated by remote control. Another tradition is parasol duelling, which this year was more like umbrella duelling as the weather was a bit iffy.
I can thoroughly recommend this event, within the wonderfully eccentric village setting and alongside the friendliest of people.
