Reasons for trip

Many people plan a day tour to this wonderful beauty spot. We booked a two night stay at a village property on a bed and breakfast basis. We were given a large room with en-suite bathroom. A bay window with two comfy club chairs overlooking the estuary was a favourite place to enjoy a complimentary glass of sherry while watching the tides change. A map and guide points out the many buildings. Some are b&b, some are self catering accommodations others are shops and cafes. There is the Hotel Portmeirion which also serves breakfast to those in the village b&b accommodation and another hotel at Castell Deudraeth. We enjoyed a delicious dinner of Welsh lamb on our first night. Our only disappointment was the very weak WiFi. Staying overnight allows the guest to roam the village when the day visitors have left

We are an older couple with mobility and other health issues. We found a map online that points out the accessible pathways around the fabulous gardens. It points out where there are stairs to avoid but there is one very steep hill coming from breakfast at the hotel to the rest of the village. There is a free train ride around the steep woodland trails.

The gardens are breathtaking, in Italianate splendour. The hydrangeas were in full bloom lining all the pathways and access road. Many colourful buildings were a treat to the eyes.
