Reasons for trip

We have visited Liverpool before and sampled the attractions around the Albert Dock area. We have joined the Magical Mystery tour to Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields etc. and even had my picture taken outside the Cavern pub next to John Lennon’s statue, so we decided to visit Port Sunlight instead when Liverpool was one of the ports on our Around the British Isles cruise.

There are already a few reviews on Port Sunlight with background history on this site, so this one is on how to do it yourself without paying for an exorbitant cruise excursion.

You can easily do this excursion yourself without paying $120 per person for the ship’s excursion.

We turned right out of the dock and approximately 10-15 minute walk (depending on your pace) is James Street station. We bought a one day all zone saver ticket and took the train, just over half an hour’s ride, to Bebington. Port Sunlight is the other station but Bebington is nearer to the Port Sunlight Museum and the Lady Lever Art Gallery. Admission to the Gallery is free.

The Port Sunlight Museum is an ideal place to start your visit to the village. There are audio-visual and interactive displays and all history pertaining to the Lever global empire. We spent over two hours there, followed by a self-led walk around the village. There is also a Tea Room at the Museum.

We only popped into the Art Gallery for a quick look but you can easily spend a whole day at the latter.

On the return train journey, we got off at the Woodside stop and our all zone saver ticket allowed us to take the ferry back across the Mersey to Albert Dock. To take the ferry across the Mersey was also on our agenda. This flexibility enabled us to incorporate it into our outing to Port Sunlight.

It was an excellent diy excursion and cost under £20 for both of us for the train fare and admission to the museum.
