Reasons for trip

Mellieha Bay to Popeye Village at Anchor Bay – less than 2 miles.

Get bus to Cirkewwa in the north, (where the ferry leaves for Gozo) and get off at the stop in the bay (sea on your right). Take the small road opposite, just below the holiday village, going inland – if you find yourself walking alongside a dual carriageway you have gone too far so go back a bit towards the holiday village. The bus 237 goes direct to Popeye Village and back to the bay.

You can actually see Popeye Village clearly from the path, and from this viewpoint the fantastically clear turquoise water below seems just as unreal as the village. This is where they made the film starring Robin Williams. You can pay to go in and speak to characters dressed for the occasion or just view it from above. Either way, it is unusual and unexpected in the context of an ancient Mediterranean island.

A further walk, around 4 miles, from this point follows the coast road (with the sea on your right) until you come to Manikata and Golden Bay. There are lots of buses from here after a coffee and snack or walk on the beach.
