Reasons for trip

We were so lucky that our intended visit to the National Trust-owned Polesden Lacey coincided with a spell of lovely sunny weather. It was a beautiful car ride from our home in Sussex through the countryside to this wonderful country estate in Surrey.

On arrival we were asked if we would like a short guided tour of the house. These little introductory tours take place in the mornings, then after 12.30 visitors are able to go in and look round at their leisure. It was interesting to be told a little of the late Mrs Greville's history and to learn about her fantastic country estate. We heard about some of the famousl guests who have stayed there over the years including the Duke and Duchess of York who honeymooned there in 1923.

Once outside again, there were the most wonderful views for miles and miles over the green fields and trees, and what we so appreciated, were all the deckchairs set out on the lawns which visitors were free to sit on and admire the views, eat their picnics etc.

The flower beds were a picture; we were a little too early for the lavender bushes but the beds full of irises were an absolute picture. We stood awhile watching visitors making use of the croquet set on the lawn and we admired the lilacs and laburnums by the house.

If only we had been able to stay later we would have enjoyed walking further round the grounds, so I'm sure we shall return another time.
