Reasons for trip

This is a popular place with locals with a reputation for good home cooked food sourced locally. I was looking for somewhere to take a friend for lunch and daughter suggested we try here.

It is just a few minutes drive from Scunthorpe but set in attractive wooded countryside. It doesn’t seem possible it is less than two miles from the Tata steel works. The farm is a popular day out for families with indoor and outdoor play areas, tractor rides and animals. There is also a farm shop attached to the restaurant.

The restaurant is an attractive light airy room with pale wood tables and chairs. It was fairly busy with oldies at lunchtime. The wet weather had probably discouraged families. There is an extensive “menu”:http://www.pinkpigfarm.co.uk/uploads/downloads/ppf-summer-2015-menu-%5Bpress%5D.pdf with hot dishes including fish and chips, gammon, pulled pork and pies. They also serve a range of sandwiches on a choice of different breads, and sausages.

We chose the pie of the day, which was chicken and leek today. It was a huge plateful for £8.99 and we had difficulty finishing it. There was a generous filling wrapped in puff pastry. This didn’t have a lot of taste and the big chunky pieces of chicken could have done with longer cooking. They were a bit chewy. It came with carrots, cauliflower, broccoli and chips. Agin these were thick and chunky. A separate boat of gravy finished it off. Overall verdict was average. Another visit I would probably consider one of the sausage options. These looked to be very good, served on an open roll with a variety of garnishes, coleslaw and salad.

Unfortunately there was no way we could find space for a slice of cake afterwards, perhaps just as well as the selection was limited to Chocolate cake or Victoria sponge, scones and tray bakes. I felt this let them down as the Pink Pig is one of the cafes featured in the North Lincolnshire Tea Pot Trail.

For those with smaller appetites, it is possible to eat off the children’s menu although the choice is a bit more restricted here.

Orders are placed at the small counter and there was a ten minute wait for our meal to be served. Staff were pleasant.

I’m not sure the restaurant lived up to all the hype this visit.
