Pickering Castle overlooking the town is surrounded by a dry moat. Most people head straight into the castle, not realising there is a lovely short walk around the outside, with a well made footpath along the bottom of the moat. This gives a good view of just how impressive the outer wall and towers were, in particular the square Rosamund Tower with its small postern gate giving access to the moat.
The walk can be done in either direction but if going anticlockwise, it is a stiff climb back up to the main entrance.
In early June, the banks were covered with wild flowers.
