We booked our stay in Madeira with TUI staying at the Hotel Pestana Carlton in Funchal. I have nothing but praise for the hotel – its location, comfort, cleanliness, food and attentive staff.
Our room was situated on a corner of the 11th floor with a panoramic view of the sea and mountains. We had sliding glass windows leading onto the glass balustrade balcony – not for those afraid of heights as the wooded valley below was a long way down!
The buffet breakfasts were varied and very good. We went out to a different restaurant each evening for our dinner. These included “Garden Grill”, “Chalet”, “Madeira Flavours”, “Red Lion” and “Restaurante X Tonel” opposite the Reids Hotel. The meals cost in the region of 21euros each. Don’t be put off by the name, but one of the best local dishes was called Black Scabbard Fish with Banana!
The hotel itself had wonderful sea views with direct access to the ocean, gardens, two outdoor saltwater swimming pools, a dive centre, a 25ft indoor pool, Jacuzzi, Turkish bath, spa, Wi-Fi, mini golf, games room, tennis court, 4 restaurants and 2 bars. There was different entertainment laid on each evening. I have lasting memories of beautiful balmy sunsets and romantic moonlight strolls (pity I was only holidaying with my daughter!)
It was ten minutes by foot to Funchal city centre, which we explored when not out on an excursion. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel if you were staying in Madeira. Remember that the temperature is pleasant for most of the year averaging 17 to 24 degrees, which suits me fine. The island is a riot of colour and flowers – gorgeous….
