Reasons for trip

My wife and I have visited Malta many times over the last 20 years but only came across this hidden gem a few years ago. The hilltop village or small town of Naxxar (pronounced Nash-Shar) is roughly two miles north east of Mosta and easily reached by bus from Valletta. It isn’t somewhere that the average tourist is likely to pass through; and those that do may take little notice of the facade of the 18th century Palazzo Parisio opposite the church, which gives few clues as to the treasures that lie behind. To quote the official website (“Palazzo Pariso”:http://www.palazzoparisio.com):

“Located in the heart of picturesque Naxxar, this stately home is a place of wonder that begs to be explored. On your visit you will discover the intricate nuances of Malta’s historic nobility and their enchanting way of life. Touring this stately home offers great insight and sparks the imagination – whether you find yourself seeking inspiration from the grand Ballroom, the detailed Family Chapel or the fabulous walled Gardens and Orangery, you’ll find it”.

It is indeed a beautiful building with a magnificent marble staircase and exquisite period fittings. Best of all, it is truly open to the public with very few roped-off areas or intrusive ‘do not touch’ signs (although some restrictions may currently apply). A balcony on the first floor affords magnificent views of the extensive gardens at the rear of the house, which may be fully explored on foot – a lush oasis in what is generally considered to be a very barren country. There is also a rather pleasant – if a touch pricey – cafeteria in the gardens. Overall, it is a very pleasant place to visit, particularly in the morning, before organised tours arrive.
