Relaxation

We enjoy going to Buxton to the opera and G&S festivals but on this occcasion our ususal choice of hotels were full so I though we'd have a special treat going to the Palace How wrong can you be? I friend had told me that it was very tatty. Well one can expect a mid-Victorian building to be a bit tatty but I thought it should be rather gracious. I hadn't imagined that after the makeover for their centenary in 1968 (that date may be out by a few years) when they put in bathrooms with the most extraordinary plumbing, almost no maintenance would be done. Everything is falling to bits, doesn't work, worn out or is cheaply and nastily renovated, pavings tones tilt windows are jammed awful cheap furniture is fit only for the bonfire. Floor boards in the room and corridors make a great deal of noise and the plumbing is 'symphonic' Worse is that our room overlooked the side entrance to the ballroom so that each night unitl the early hours we were treated to drunken revels even though the staff claimed to have done something about it. Unfortunately this is also reflected in the staff's attitude so that you get a parrot fashion 'I'm so sorry' to anything.

Good points – breakfast is good – defintiely not excellent, but good. There was always hot water. The room was big.
