We stayed overnight at the Hotel Carol, in Constanţa, Romania’s principal port, before heading out to the Danube Delta.
There were 24 rooms over three floors, and our large first-floor room had a soft king-size bed with a heavy silk cover. When removed, it revealed a duvet which didn’t cover the bed, let alone two bodies, resulting in overnight tussles for control. However, the bedside tables had lights and charging points. The dark wood, antique looking furniture comprised of a wardrobe with robes, slippers and safe, a dresser and stool, and two comfortable chairs with a coffee table. It was also equipped with a fully stocked mini bar, tea and coffee making facilities, and a TV.
The bathroom was similarly large with a shower cubicle, plentiful hot water, and space for our toiletries and a plethora of complimentary ones.
Complimentary Wi-Fi worked well, but the air conditioning only appeared to be on or off, so we opened the window and listened to the seagulls squawking.
A breakfast buffet was served from 7am to 10am on the ground floor. The cold selection comprised of juices, whole fruits, yoghurts, cereal, a platter of ham and cheeses, and a good selection of salads, many featuring grilled vegetables. Fried eggs were also available, as well as bread and croissant.
There was a communal lounge, but no bar or restaurant. However, there were plenty of options within a 15-minute walk with the Neversea Beach and Black Sea being nearer.
Having arrived in Constanţa at 3pm and left at 9am the next morning, we didn’t have time to use the facilities, said to include a fitness room, hot tub, and sauna, with massage treatments being available.
