It was a cold late October day and raining steadily. I was in need of a warming lunch and was recommended to go here by the guide at Epworth Old Rectory.
There is a take out counter which was doing a steady trade and a small cafe to eat in I decided to eat in. It is an attractive room with pale blue and white walls and pale wood furniture with blue and white place mats. My order was quickly taken and soon arrived. I ordered the fish special with small cod, chips and mushy peas.
There is a choice of either cod or haddock in different size portions. They also serve meat pies, burgers and sausages as well as Jacket potatoes and wraps in the cafe. There is a surcharge of £1 per person to eat in.
The batter was light and crisp and the fish moist and tasty. There was a plentiful helping of thickly cut chips fried to perfection. The mushy peas (and they were mushy too with none of the hard peas which need longer cooking) came out in a small ramekin. I was asked if I wanted any tartare sauce which came out in another small bowl. I had asked for a glass of water, which came out in a carafe, a nice touch.
It filled me and I was too full to be tempted by the puddings, either chocolate pudding or syrup sponge and custard.
When I came to pay I was charged for a mini fish which came to a total of £4.50. If this was a mini cod piece then a large portion would feed a family of four. I felt this was excellent value for a well cooked fish and chip meal. It certainly hit the places it was needed.
The Oceans is open from 11.45-1.30 (not Mondays) and again from 4.45-8.30 at night. It is shut all day Sundays.
