The most popular area of Copenhagen is without doubt the Nyhavn area. On the side of the canal the houses have been colourfully renovated with busy restaurants lining the pavement, and historic boats alongside waiting to take tourists on a canal tour. Hans Christian Andersen lived here and wrote his famous fairy tales.
The best way to reach this area of the city is to alight the metro at Kongens Nytorv at the department store of Magasin du Nord. This brings you on to a cobbled square with a circle of trees in the centre. Then you pass the impressive old Der Kongelige Teater (The Royal Danish Theatre) and the Kunsthal Charlottenborg (Art Museum). Turning into the canal area you have the vista of the brightly coloured houses. At the far end is Skuespilhuset (The Playhouse), which is a modern purpose-built waterside theatre with dining and great views.
Nyhavn is an attractive part of the city in the day, or in the evening, and is a definite must for the tourist.
