Reasons for trip

“This is the best place around here for lunch,” the friend I was visiting said – and it seems she’s probably right. Certainly if packed tables are anything to go by. We arrived at 12 for lunch and within half an hour all the tables were full. The coffee shop is in Wolsingham Market Place and we both found space in the nearby street parking, where it’s free for up to three hours. There are several disabled parking bays just a few yards from the entrance too.

The outside seating was empty and not too tempting on a January day when I’d driven through freezing fog to reach this part of Weardale, but inside it was warmer. (Not very hot though, my friend kept her coat on, but I was ok with my body warmer). Having said that it was exceptionally cold outside.

But we received a warm welcome from the staff and the soup which we ordered – pea and ham, and tomato) was delicious and enormous servings. It came with two wholemeal rolls and butter for me, while my friend had two slices of gluten- free bread.

We shared a portion of chunky chips, which were lovely and crunchy.

At nearly tables, the most amazing stacked sandwiches were being served, including fish finger sandwiches which were very popular. The menu offers a wide range of lunchtime snacks including paninis, baked potatoes and sandwiches. At the counter, where you place your order, there is also a very tempting selection of sweet treats. We decided to settle for Americanos instead, and while these looked and smelled lovely, mine was a lot weaker than I’m used to, so if I do go back I’ll ask for an extra shot – next time in the spring or summer, when we might be tempted to sit outside.
