Nidd Hall lies in the Yorkshire Dales near the historic town of Ripley. The 45 acres of landscaped grounds and lake are a fine setting inviting leisurely strolls. A fascinating feature is a collection of outdoor exercising machines which are fun to try. On arrival we received an itinerary for the weekend and we were amazed at the things planned. Through the day there was rifle shooting, archery, bowls, croquet, tennis, golf driving, fishing – and that was just outdoors. Inside there were dancing classes, quizzes, wine tasting, vignettes, snooker, pool, and the leisure club pool and spa. There are several quiet rooms where you can rest and read, but also a crazy games Wii TV where guests can relive their childhood. Pat said it was like being on a cruise. Before being allocated a restaurant table we chose our wines for the three evenings at a 10% discount. We had booked a Historic Room (with complimentary wine) which was beautifully appointed with every requirement, and with a luxurious hi-tech bathroom. The Rawson restaurant offered a table-served menu and a carvery so the only problem was choice. The dining room was a trifle noisy but the fine food and our smart waiter made up for that. The highlight was dinner in the Terrace Restaurant where for a supplement we were treated like royalty. The staff members were a five-star team: attentive and efficient. We were so impressed we invited chef to our table for a glass of wine to thank and to congratulate her. Bar drinks are expensive but you might be eligible for a concierge card and get 10% off. Warners have a fine reputation for adult holidays – born out by the resident band that played ‘our kind of music’ for ballroom and sequence dancing. The three variety shows comprised singing and dancing from the six members of the entertainment group whose energy and verve were a joy to see. The top show featured tribute artists: Hank Marvin, Buddy Holly, Billy Fury and The Everly Brothers – a fabulous treat that Warners does so well. We took great comfort from being among people of our own age – people who were smartly dressed, courteous, friendly, and above all – quiet! We have stayed in Warners hotels six times and rate Nidd Hall as the best. We enjoyed one of the discounts for late bookings and I don’t know how they did it for the price. We left on the crest of a wave – planning to return… again!
