Reasons for trip

The Museum of Liverpool is down by the waterfront by the Pier Head. Modern building that’s easy to negotiate, laid out on 3 floors with stairs and lift access. There’s a cafe and a gift shop on the ground floor. Plenty of toilets from what I could see.

Now what could this museum tell this visiting old scouser? …………Plenty!

They had a variety of exhibits on, at the moment there’s a excellent display on World War 1 & 2 with lots of emphasis on the local regiments. Then there’s the display of photos relating to the bomb damaged caused to the city during WWII – it brought home the horrors experienced by my parents, aunts, uncles etc who lived through it.

A very interesting subject covered was how the Chinese community made Liverpool their home, often marrying local Liverpool girls. There are lots of photos and stories based on the experience of a number of Chinese families, their family trees and the jobs they used to do. One fact, that was hushed up by the Government was the secret deportation of Chinese men after WWII, some men literally “disappearing” over night, shipped back to China leaving their wives and children completely bewildered to what had happened to them!

The Jewish community is also shown how they established and made their lives in Liverpool with lots of photos and momentos of their early days.

Among other areas covered are the overhead dock railway, complete with carriage, old trains used for the early days of the Manchester Liverpool railway, how Liverpool became established through the ages. The list goes on…..

It made for a lovely couple of hours entertainment and enlightenment and the incredible thing it was FREE! It has appeal for all ages and there were a couple of groups of well behaved school children in at the time, as well as a good mixture of tourists.
