Melilla is a Spanish city located on the north side of Africa. I spent the day here whilst on a cruise. Rather than a tour, four of us decided to explore the city. the main part of the city has some pleasant enough parts but we spent most of the time exploring the street markets in the old town where locals were selling fish in boxes on the street, vegetables, fruit, spices and clothes. The area is very dirty and overcrowded with vehicles beeping at everyone in sight! It’s such an uncomfortable contrast, having left the opulent luxury and over indulgence of the ship.
If doing the same, you do need to be very careful with personal belongings and explore in small groups, not alone. I felt safer here than in Morocco but still needed to be aware.
One funny moment was when I bought a custard Apple from an indoor market. I always ask permission to take a photo and was much amused when he gladly agreed and tried various poses, followed by his friends. It wasn’t a ruse to steal my camera just genuine fun. I don’t think they had many tourists there.
You cannot visit the beach as there is a high razor wire fence. We saw the police frisking several possible migrants.
I wouldn’t rush back but it was all part of life’s experience.
