In general, we do not like airport hotels. They are expensive, soulless and sometimes none too clean. But the Marriott Courtyard Hotel was different. It’s a clean modern and airy hotel near Gatwick South Terminal. As we live some distance from Gatwick, we booked both the night before and after our flight plus car parking as a package. Check-in was efficient and swift. There is a car park desk right next to reception. We simply confirmed our booking and handed over the car keys. Our car was then taken to a secure park overnight. We were asked if we required the car to be delivered to Gatwick South to meet our return flight. As we were staying at the hotel on our return, we opted for the car to be delivered there. We are pleased to report that everything went like clockwork. All hotel staff were smart, friendly and pleasant. We chose the Early Bird dinner option at the Volare Restaurant. Although a budget offer, the food was varied, interesting and well presented. Wine prices were as expected for a hotel. The bedroom was large, quiet and well decorated. The air conditioning was quiet and actually worked well. This has not been our experience in certain other chain hotels, where the aircon, if it works at all, is often noisy and inefficient. One minus point at the Courtyard was that the inclusive buffet breakfast is not available in time to fit in with check-in times for early flights. So outbound we had to make do with coffee. Although Gatwick South Terminal is only a 10 minute walk from the hotel, we used the airport bus which was punctual but a rather steep £3/head for a half mile journey. Our return night at the hotel was equally pleasant and relaxed. We chose from the à la carte menu and each enjoyed excellent sirloin steaks – a great treat after a fortnight of holiday hotel buffet eating. Should we need to stay at Gatwick again, we shall certainly choose the Marriott Courtyard.
