“Maison St-Aubin”:https://www.menupix.com/ontario/restaurants/1173051/Maison-St-Aubins-Sarnia-ON is a small establishment at the corners of Lakeshore and Murphy roads in Sarnia, Ontario. It is in a little strip mall with room for parking. Although it has been there for 19 years my aunt and I only became aware of its existence a couple of years ago. Recently we finally made a visit to celebrate my birthday.
A few years ago we spent a week in Paris and my aunt tried out French onion soup, a favourite of hers, at a number of restaurants. When I saw that it was on the menu I knew she’d be having that for her dinner. As soon as we walked in from the blaring sunshine we were taken back to a French bistro. There is lots of art deco style artwork on the walls and there is even a mural on one wall that is a nod to Van Gogh’s work. French music was playing on the sound system but that changed to a pianist playing 70s ballads during our meal.
The fresh baguette and butter to munch on while we waited for our dishes were delicious. My aunt’s soup was very hearty and cheesy so she opted to forgo a main course and paired it with a small Caesar Salad. I stuck with just a main course and chose the lamb shank served with frîtes and al dente vegetables – green beans, red peppers, cauliflower and broccoli. Sadly we were both full and had to decline a dessert. One day we’ll make it back there just for dessert and coffee! The service was very attentive and friendly.
Neither of us had any wine however I did check out the wine list and though it is small, it has some very good choices and I would have been happy with a number of them. This is a fine dining establishment so the prices reflect that.
