Each August Lytham, on the Fylde coast, relives the 1940 era with vintage vehicles, aircraft, re-enactments, displays, dancing and singing.
Different events take place – one of which is the Reinvintaged Fashion Show which is always very popular. There is always “Winston Churchill” making a rousing speech too and “George Formby” entertaining us on his ukelele. A classic vehicle convoy travels through the town directed by a “traffic policeman” and the procession ends on Lytham Green (this is on the seafront by the windmill) Here you can watch the battle re-enactments – but cover your ears when the guns go off!
In the town centre, there are plenty of places to eat and drink with businesses entering into the spirit by dressing up their shops ,and themselves, for the occasion. In Clifton Square, you can watch, or join in with, the jitterbug dancing.
Daytime entertainment is presented in the main marquee by Johnny Victory, Paula Marie, Lancashire Belle and The Bluebirds. The entertainers are accompanied also by Co Sign – British Sign Language. The evening’s entertainment( for which you need to pay for tickets) is provided by the Kalamazoo Dance Band in the marquee, and the We’ll Meet Again Variety Show in the Lowther Pavilion.
The Lytham Green event is free but parking is £10 per car per day – this money goes straight back into paying for all the costs for the organisation. The address is by the River Ribble Estuary Central Beach, Lytham Saint Annes, Lancashire, FY8 5LD.
The great thing about this event is the fact that it is relatively easy to see everything without being too tiring. But the best thing overall is the friendly atmosphere!
