The Victorian era was celebrated on the Llangollen Railway during a weekend in May. All the stations along the line took a step back in time.
At Glyndyfrdwy Station we encountered Queen Victoria and her entourage enjoying a ride on the carousel – although true to form she did not look amused!
At Berwyn the station was decorated for the Royal Visit in 1889 with live music to entertain us.A walk across the oldest chain link bridge in the world allows lovely views of the Dee Valley.
At Llangollen we enjoyed a delicious cream tea in the buffet car. There was a Victorian railway exhibition in the Henry Robertson suite and a gift shop to browse in. There was live music on the platform, a Punch & Judy Show and a man with a monkey and barrel organ. Beside the station there were two vintage steam traction engines.
We were surprised at the lack of support for this event – the organisers said that it had been a quiet day. We love steam trains so it was a special treat for us.
