Reasons for trip

Langton’s cafe is in the old Georgian prison at the opposite end to the shop. There are a couple of indoor seating areas with more outside in the courtyard. It serves a selection of sandwiches, paninis, and jacket potatoes during the day as well as a rather uninspiring selection of cakes.

Menus are on the tables, so check on these before going to the small counter to place your order. Unless there are long queues, service is quick and your order is delivered to your table.

The only hot offering is soup of he day served with a roll. Servings sizes looked to be generous. The choice was curried parsnip, so I settled for a sandwich – double cheese and onion, served on either white or granary bread. This came with a selection of red and green salad leaves and slices of red onion with oil and balsamic vinegar dressing and a good handful of crisps. The filling was generous – thicker than the bread and was mixed with mayonnaise to hold it all together. It was a hearty offering and filled me up.

This is probably as well as none of the cakes had tempted me, with a choice of muffins which I always find uninspiring, choc chip biscuits, choc chip shortbread, flapjack, brownies and rocky road. There were no slices of homemade cake….

Prices are comparable with elsewhere in Lincoln, with soup at £3.95, sandwiches £5.50, paninis and jacket potatoes at £5.25. If visiting the castle and just wanting a snack, it is worth investigating.

Don’t miss the prisoner’s menu hung on the wall with its emphasis on oatmeal gruel and bread.
