My husband’s roots are British. For many years he and his siblings thought about reconnecting with their ancestral homeland and doing personal fieldwork to research their family tree. We spent a wonderful two weeks in Windermere and The Lake District in search of family history. The thing we found most incredible was that the small churches we explored had well documented maps of all the graveyard sites. It was easier than we thought to build a full family tree by searching online databases, church records and visiting the churches themselves. In the end we were rewarded by finding the grave site of my husband’s triple great grandfather! It was an incredible education and wonderful bonding experience for our adult children. It gave them a unique opportunity to hear family stories shared over a pint or two with their aunts and uncles who joined us on this journey; and a chance to see the sights of the magnificent part of the world from where their paternal roots sprung forth.
