We were staying in Cardiff for 3 nights so decided to treat ourselves to an Afternoon Tea at the Park Plaza hotel in city centre. We have sampled their Hendrick’s Gin afternoon tea before – very decadent pouring gin and tonic from a dainty porcelain teapot – but thought we would try the savory version “Gentlemen’s Afternoon Tea”. No doubt someone will complain about the name, but for the moment this is the version without the little sandwiches and sweet cake selection (or their very special Hendrick’s Gin Afternoon Tea!). We were really pleased with our choice – note you should order in advance for this version where possible.
It arrived as a flat slate platter each, with a selection of six savory dishes carefully arranged. The mini prawn cocktail was like a little starter followed by a smoked salmon blini then a warm Scotch egg. The more substantial choices are a warm lamb burger in a brioche bun, a slice of roast beef on top of a tiny Yorkshire pudding and horseradish sauce, and a pulled-pork ciabatta sandwich. Despite its name, you also get 2 desserts of a chocolate mousse and a rhubarb and custard ball – actually a little cheesecake. We chose to top up the event with a glass of bubbly each (extra £7 each) plus tea and coffee, so an impressive way to spend an afternoon in town.
Price per person is £20.95, on Saturday and Sunday it is £22.95
