Reasons for trip

Whilst staying in Kotor at the Hotel Porto In, we’d always turned right out of the hotel and headed towards the old town with its plethora of bars and restaurants. However, on our final day it was hot, and having retired to our room to escape the mid-day temperatures I’d idly Googled ‘restaurants nearby’. I couldn’t believe it when “Ladovina Kitchen and Wine Bar”:http://www.ladovina.me/, the 4th highest rated restaurant out of 101 on Trip Advisor, was 2 minutes on foot from the hotel – but you’ve guessed it, in the opposite direction. We checked it out later that afternoon and found it open. However, as it was a Sunday and there were numerous tables in a lovely open courtyard, we didn’t feel the need to book.

At 7.30pm, we found the place humming and got one of the last tables down the side of the restaurant. The menu was relatively short, with around six starters, soup, pizza, grills, and salads. We opted for bruschetta with proscuttio to start with, which was six thin slices of bread lavishly topped, and attractively displayed on a grey slate. A home-made burger came with a basket of chips and a pepperoni pizza were excellent. There was a wide-ranging wine list and we chose the cheapest white at €18. When we ordered espresso with milk and two glasses of limoncello the waiter said, ‘you’ll have to show me on the menu’. When I pointed it out, he said ‘ah limoncello’ in much the same way I had. When I asked him how he pronounced it he laughed heartily, ‘I’ve no idea, I don’t know what it is’. When we paid, as is customary in Montenegro, service wasn’t included and there was no facility to leave a tip on the machine. I handed him €5 and suggested he use it to try limonecello which he thought highly amusing.

Whilst the place had been packed on arrival, an hour later it was virtually empty, but as we were leaving around 9pm, it was having a resurgence with later diners arriving.
