Booked online as a special offer – £29.50 to include a free 20cl bottle of Prosecco plus 20% off drinks at the bar between 6-6.30pm – but only an upper circle seat was available. An excellent offer, but I completely forgot the Prosecco and the discount as I only notice they had upgraded the seat to the stalls – how could this be, I still ask myself? However, I digress.
I have seen the film Kinky Boots quite a few years ago so wasn’t sure how it would translate into a stage show with music. I needn’t have worried as it was a real “spectacular” event. When Simon from Clacton appeared as the sensational Drag Queen Lola, it was a breath-taking moment, especially when her other Drag Queen friends came on stage to a fitting cheer from the audience.
They had stunning figures as women, with lots of outrageous sparkly frocks and very high stiletto shoes. How do they manage to dance so energetically in them? The shoe factory set was cleverly done and the whole team of shop-floor workers, all shapes and sizes, sang and danced enthusiastically. The voices of the main characters were extremely powerful and emotive.
It is an uplifting show, lots of glitter and glam with an impressive troupe of Drag Queens. As Lola pointed out “we are not Transvestites, if you don’t mind! They usually look like Churchill in his wife’s knickers. No, WE are Drag Queens!” The final scene where every cast member dances in over-the-knee stiletto boots is impressive, and very funny, supported by an exuberant audience standing and clapping in time. It was a great night out even without the bubbly.
