Our main purpose in visiting the Kastellett area of Copenhagen was to see the famous Little Mermaid statue. We got off the train at Osterport, walking down the road at first, passing the Svenska Kyrkan (church), then turning right into Langeline. Many people use the Hop on Hop off bus. It is an attractive area with a harbour with small yachts and a number of sculptures. We were fascinated to see the seaplanes landing on the water – now that would have been a great way to arrive at this destination!
Kastellett is a fortress on a star-shaped island surrounded by a moat. The fortress and ramparts were built in 1662. The area is free to visit with a museum, barracks, a chapel and a windmill. There is a regular “changing of the guard” ceremony at 12md. After walking through the high -level park area, we came out at Gefionspringyandet – a bronze fountain depicting a Norse goddess.
Definitely a must-see part of Copenhagen.
