At first sight, this hotel looks a little run down. But after a peaceful night and excellent breakfast, our views changed. In advance, I booked a "quiet" room and when we arrived, the staff were so anxious to please that it took them 15 minutes of discussion before suggesting room 729. Because of this – not only did a queue form behind us but we received two complimentary drinks vouchers at the bar for the delay! The room was next to the lift but at the back – and we didn't hear a thing all night. It was quite small, but perfectly adequate and clean. Breakfast was served from 6.30am – 10am and was very good. The quality was not brilliant (undrinkable orange juice and odd bacon) but there was so much choice I would recommend it – if you can get a cheap inclusive rate (£69 for double room plus breakfast) and not pay the actual price of £10 a head. Lots of seats in the lobby, a good bar with food as well as drinks, and the staff looked after our bags and were extremely helpful. Location – this hotel is perfect. A 5 minute stroll and we were in the Barbican which is a wonderfully developed waterside area with shops, restaurants, pubs and Plymouth Gin factory. Just over the road was Drake's Circus – one of the best shopping malls we have ever seen.
