Reasons for trip

From the moment I walked in the door of this cafe/bistro, I felt welcome. Only arriving in Orkney and reaching Stromness during the afternoon, I decided that it would be nice to relax over a mug of hot chocolate.

With so many cafes now being ‘order at the counter’, I was unaware that there was table service. No matter, my order was taken and the hot chocolate was soon delivered. What can I say about the drink? well, it was one of the better hot drinks on this trip, very nice.

Convenient for Stromness ferry terminal and the marina, a busy mix of locals, passengers and tourists were eating. There were day-trippers from the mainland and a couple of small cruise ships’ passengers.

I returned another twice during my stay in Stromness and again, later, while waiting for the Northlink ferry departure.

Two visits were for meals, the very warm sunshine meant choosing a salad from the varied menu and, once, eating at the outside tables. ‘Small portions’ were on offer for those with small appetites or those who only wanted a snack.

I would suggest that it is worth waiting for a table seat (never took more than a few minutes when I visited) rather than sitting at the bar-style seating to the left of the door.

The menu is available on their “website”:http://www.juliascafe.co.uk/ with specials on the blackboard.
