Reasons for trip

Shoppers in Newcastle’s Eldon Square are spoilt for choice when it comes to places to eat, with more opening very soon. But when my son and daughter-in-law returned for Fathers Day, we returned to an old favourite which had gone by the wayside as we’d tried out new dining experiences.

We arrived just after 11am and were disappointed to find a closed sign. The waiter waved at us and asked if we were coming in – then was mortified when he saw that the sign hadn’t been changed to ‘please wait to be seated’. No wonder we were the first customers!

It was our first visit since my husband became wheelchair bound, and we appreciated the space between the tables. The brasserie is a sleek, long dining area which overlooks the shopping area and despite all the busyness below, it is a very pleasant, relaxing place to eat.

Breakfasts are served at the weekend and I opted for the bagel with bacon and scrambled eggs. It was really tasty, with a pea shoot garnish that added a little zing. My son had the full English which he really enjoyed and my husband and daughter-in-law each chose bagel, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

For drinks I started with an orange juice – Fairtrade – and then had a black Americano, which reminded me of one of the reasons why we used to eat here so often, as the coffee really is delicious.

The place filled up quite quickly ( once the closed sign was taken down!) as people arrived for lunch, and the dishes being served looked so good I’ve added a return visit to my list for eating out.

The service was really very good, attentive but unobtrusive, and led to a very relaxed family meal out.

The only disadvantage is that the toilets are not very close, although they are on the same floor, and that’s why I’ve dropped a star in my review.
