Reasons for trip

I was looking for a last minute single traveller deal, which as every single traveller knows always comes at twice the cost even when they claim there are no single person supplements. However, I came across what I thought was a good deal with 4 nights in Jersey, including flights and accommodation at just under £300. Jersey hasn’t been at the top of my to do list but with recent films based around the channel islands and this being a location my sister and her partner like to visit for walking breaks I thought “why not?”. As it happened I was going to be cat sitting for my sister whilst her and Stuart spent a few days in Jersey before I flew off. Susan’s, being the best sister decided to stay on for a few more days to keep me company and to show me some of her best bits of the island.

The hotel, the Stafford, was in an excellent location in St Hellier, My sister opted to stay in the sister hotel a few doors down, which had more character but I had a better room! My sister introduced me to the charm of her favourite resort, St Aubin. Jersey has interesting tides which make for great walks along endless stretches of beaches so a beach walk from St. Helier to St. Aubin was called for. Seafood is in abundance on the island and St. Aubin has a good selection of restaurants. The crab shack in St. Brelades was a disappointment but the Salty Dog in St. Aubin was not and I enjoyed a Black Bream supper, although the veg was a tad on the raw side and could have done with a few more minutes in the steamer.

Whilst there I visited the war tunnels (interesting and you get issued with an ID card of a real islander from the time period and have to establish their fate) and I visited Elizabeth Castle and Corbiere lighthouse, although you can’t actually get in the lighthouse, very disappointing, but good fun rushing back across the causeway when the alarm goes off to advise the tide is coming in. As it happens we could have strolled back, but watching the tide come in is fascinating. The same being the case at Elizabeth castle, which is also accessed by a causeway. However, I found my favourite place after my sister had returned to England and I was solo once more. Gorey Pier was my favoured spot on Jersey. The castle was undoubtedly far more interesting than Elizabeth, it is older and more historic with a number of challenges of aspects to find, not all so blatantly obvious, and with that many nooks and crannys one could possibly get lost. It has a wide expanse of beach and the views in every direction are just amazing. If I had somewhere in the region of 1 million Jersey pounds that is where I would live!

So now I have a taste it is somewhere I would definitely go back to although I would possibly keep to short breaks and it has whetted my appetite for the other channel islands.
