Four of us ate at this restaurant on Watergate Bay a fortnight ago. We all chose the five curse tasting menu with five accompanying wines and were treated to an unbeatable feast of fine food and wine.
Yes, it was very expensive – so it’s a once a year treat – if that! However, the setting alone almost makes it worth it. The restaurant is perched above Watergate which (for those who don’t know it) is a very long and beautiful stretch of sand north of Newquay, a paradise for surfers of all sorts and all ages. We sat looking out of the picture window which must be fully three hundred feet long and – the final touch – there was a glorious sunset over the sea to accompany our meal.
The menu changes daily but suffice it to say that it has a distnictly Italian flavour and is all beautifully cooked. The service is impeccable, friendly and attentive but discreet.
The restaurant – which is celebrating its tenth anniversary – is staffed by apprentice chefs, many of whom have come from disadvantaged backgrounds. They work and learn in the restaurant for a year before moving on – 90% are still in employment nad 70% still cheffing. All I can add is that this unique system works outstandingly well – we had an evening to remember for a very long time.
