We had a family birthday celebration at Paddy Flaherty’s pub in Sarnia, Ontario this past weekend and it was very enjoyable, from the food to the service to the music. This is apparently a chain but it’s the first and only one I’ve been to. There is a large patio outside overlooking the St. Clair River and Sarnia shore line.
We weren’t sure about it when we walked in. The noise was quite loud in the pub but the volume was less so around the corner in the dining area. There was a table set aside for our group of ten. Our reservation was for 8:00 pm and it was closer to 8:30 by the time everyone had shown up so closer to 9:00 by the time we were eating. I had a lovely non-alcoholic cocktail – a strawberry rhubarb concoction with lemonade. The food is typical pub food and very well done. The birthday girl had French onion soup and a small order of Poutine (a Quebec creation of French fries, cheese curds and gravy which people seem to love but I’ve never fancied). Others had burgers or pasta or natchos so the menu is quite varied. I had a Shepherd’s pie with Caesar salad and had enough left over for another meal a couple of days later. We had brought our own birthday cheesecake for dessert and our server was happy to bring us plates and forks.
The entertainment was a highlight for me – Art Hratchian & Friends and it was a mix of gypsy fiddle music with a great drummer to boot. It reminded me of Stéphane Grappelli and Django Reinhardt. Lots of chair dancing ensued.
All in all, it was a lovely evening out.
There is a large parking lot with accessible parking by the door.
