Reasons for trip

After our first morning on Rethymnon’s beach, we wanted to get out of the heat for a drink. One of the nearest restaurants/bars was Irini right on the seafront and a five-minute walk from our hotel, the “Sentido Agean Pearl”:http://www.silvertraveladvisor.com/travel-product/accommodation/167130-sentido-aegean-pearl

We shared a half carafe of white wine and a bottle of water for €6 which we thought good value. The service was excellent and the friendly lady in charge was Dutch and spoke great English. We then became real creatures of habit and made it our local – I particularly enjoyed it as it was near a small supermarket so I could call in for my daily ice-cream.

There was an outdoor area under an awning and an indoor area but the glass sliding window/doors were always pulled back so you could enjoy the breeze. The loos were immaculate which I always think is a good sign.

We decided to eat lunch one day and shared a Greek salad €5, which for was huge and plenty for the two of us with a big slab of salty Feta cheese on top. We also tried an excellent tuna salad and one day shared a baguette with ham, cheese and salad and the ubiquitous fries. The bread (€6) was fresh and crusty and, even though we shared one portion, it would have lasted us two days. After this experience it was back to drinks only with the peanuts acting as lunch.

As we had a late flight home, we had an early dinner. There were the usual Greek favourites, many of them coming with chips, but we plumped for a vegetarian pizza, Greek Salad, litre of white wine and water came to €25. We were offered complimentary raki or ouzo and large slabs of water melon.

All in all, it was a great find but if I’d had lunch there every day I would have put on even more weight than I did!
