Madeira is truly Paradise on Earth with so many wonderful flowers and plants and colours. The people are very friendly and the whole island is a relaxing place to stay. We have been lucky enough to come across The Savoy Gardens Hotel in Funchal, recommended by Thomsons. Initially I was doubtful about going, but we are due for a 4th visit in September. The hotel, though up a steep hill which plays havoc with the calf muscles, is a great place to stay. It is spacious, modern and very clean. The rooms are large and well appointed. The staff are genuinely friendly (not just being nice in the hopes of a tip) and very helpful. The whole atmosphere in the hotel is relaxed and friendly. There is plenty to do on site , a swimming pool, a games area on the roof with boules, mini golf, giant chess and draughts and several other games, also a smaller indoor games room with darts, giant scrabble and a pool table. The pool isn’t heated but it is not unpleasant to swim in, spotlessly clean and there are a lot of sun loungers all round. There is a sunken garden which is pleasant to sit in when it gets too hot. The food is buffet style with many choices both at breakfast and dinner. There is a roof top terrace for sunbathing with a Jacuzzi and honesty bar, the views are spectacular from here especially at sunset. The hotel is situated about 20 minutes leisurely stroll into the town ( we always stop for a coffee in the park just before the town) and similarly 20 minutes or so for the Forum and other places of interest in the opposite direction.
