Culture/Sightseeing

Whilst travelling around Sri Lanka, we spent two nights at the Hotel Ozo which was well situated within walking distance of Lake Kandy, but at the top of a hill steep enough to make you puff.

As befits a large city centre hotel, check-in was formal and there was no welcome drink. The rooms were over several floors but there were efficient lifts.

Our fourth-floor room was modern and spacious, with comfortable bed, bedside tables, English plug points, large wall mounted TV, tea and coffee making facilities, fridge with complimentary water, love seat sofa, coffee table, desk and chair.

A small balcony, with two rattan chairs and table, overlooked the lake.

The bathroom had a space saver sliding door and unusually, the wardrobe, which wasn’t the most convenient. There was a single basin, loo, and good open plan shower and, although the water pressure was good, the temperature fluctuated a little. A sign told us to hang towels if you were happy to keep them which we did, but they were still changed.

Unfortunately, after putting our valuables in the room safe we got an error message, and as I couldn’t get the phone to work, went to reception. A maintenance man quickly arrived and said he would have to send up someone else. A second man duly arrived, and said the battery needed changing which he couldn’t do. 30-minutes later, a third man brought a new safe which had to be screwed in once the old one had been removed.

The 5th floor roof top bar with small swimming pool served a good variety of bar snacks, which were ideal for lunch. It also offered lots of deals like ‘a bottle of local spirits with a portion of fries and four chasers per bottle’ or a more modest ‘three bottles of Carlsberg buddy bottles for the price of two with a portion of spicy fried calamari rings’.

More formal meals were served in the large ground floor dining room, which was open for both breakfast and dinner from 7am/pm to 10am/pm.

At breakfast, there was an extensive buffet with both English and Sri Lankan hot and cold items providing everything you could want. We didn’t use the restaurant in the evening and ate our nearby.

Our stay, whilst comfortable, was not outstanding and in future I’d possibly look for somewhere slightly smaller and with more character.
