Reasons for trip

Culture / Sightseeing

We had a most enjoyable week on the beautiful island of Lipari, a 30 min boat trip from Sicily. Lipari is one of a group of 7 volcanic islands, the most famous of which is Stromboli. The extinct volcano on Lipari itself is, of course, no longer active and has been mined for pumice and obsidian for many years. Travel to the neighbouring islands is popular and very easy by hydrofoil or via organised excursions.

The hotel is beautifully situated a 5 min walk from the port with expansive views over the bay below. Late April is an excellent time for British tourists as the temperature is always in the high teens and there’s virtually no rain and mainly cloudless skies.

We were greatly impressed by the high standard of the hotel in terms of the building itself, the rooms, the communal areas and the restaurant. We were on half board terms and especially enjoyed the choice of truly Italian dishes – starters, mains and desserts. The staff couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful; especially with the relatively complex transfer to and from Catania airport so efficiently arranged for us (and included in the price!)

Our room was adjacent to a most attractive swimming pool; unheated but pleasant enough to swim in every day once over the initial shock!

The town of Lipari is particularly pleasant. There’s a large historic castle complex with an international museum of mediterranean archeology which dominates the centre. There are a number of interesting and attractive shopping streets used equally by locals and tourists built in a wide variety of ancient and modern architectural styles.

The only hesitation that I have in recommending this location is that it would be a shame if it became too popular!
